Walter Zimmermann. German. Born Schwabach, Franconia, on April 15, 1949. Studied simultaneously at the Institute for Sonology (Utrecht) and the Jaap-Kunst Ethnology Centre (Amsterdam) 1970-73. Computer studies in Hamilton USA, 1974; ethnological research, gathering folk music, especially from American Indian reservations, 1975-6. Founded Beginner Studio in Cologne 1977; organised concert series there until 1984. From 1982, composition teacher at the Liège Conservatoire, teaching post at Royal Conservatoire Den Haag, 1988, from 1993 Professor of Composition at Berlin University for the Arts; 2009 honorary professor at Central Conservatory Beijing.
